I love bicycling. I love Grand Rapids.
My name is Joshua Duggan. I’m a trained bicycle safety educator, avid commuter, (very) amateur racer, bicycle tour co-chairperson, and passionate bicycle advocate. In the 4 years I’ve lived here, I’ve grown to love this city. That’s why in May 2008, I started a bi-weekly ride, PedalGR, through the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club to explore the neighborhoods of Grand Rapids. In 2009, I also plan to use this blog to post bicycle related news bits, with a focus on things happening in Grand Rapids.
PedalGR is a slow to moderate paced ride, 12-20 miles, starting and ending at Founder’s Brewing Company every other Wednesday at 6:30pm (the last ride of the season will start at 6:15pm to maximize sunlight). Nobody will be dropped on the ride. Having fun and riding safely are the two most important goals. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED on all Rapid Wheelmen Club rides.
Here are some shortcuts to info about the PedalGR Rides:
PedalGR Routes – This is where new routes are posted and old routes are kept for your riding pleasure.
PedalGR Maps and Cuesheets – Most of the PedalGR rides have a published map and cuesheet (turn by turn directions) in both .pdf and .jpg format. Print one out and go for your own urban bike adventure.
PedalGR Cadences – Here you can see all the fun you’re missing out on if you aren’t riding with us on PedalGR. Photos and stories from many past rides. (Lots of photos, may take awhile to load if you have a slow connection.)
Some of our rides may have a theme, like parks, churches, schools, historical landmarks, ice cream, or public art. Other weeks the route will be random. There will be a post-ride gathering inside Founder’s, for anyone who wants to stay.
In this blog you will find the planned routes for each ride, post-ride cadences, and random bike-related bits about Grand Rapids and beyond. If you want to find an interesting route to ride on your own, just download one of our route maps and cuesheets with turn by turn directions. This is also the place to check if the weather is questionable to see if the ride is still happening.
