05-22-13 – A Pleasant (St) ride around the SE side

PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 5/22/2013 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW. PedalGR is a ride of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club.

This week we’ll head to the SE side. Highlights include Ottawa Hills, Reed’s Lake, including a stop at the EGR library overlook and the gravelly fun of Reed’s Lake Blvd’s dirty half, the hidden backsides of Boston Square, and a ride by the new Downtown Market.

The day of the ride, May 22, Amy and I will be spending the day in Lansing for Lucinda Means Bicycle Advocacy Day. This great day, sponsored by four state advocacy groups, will have us lobbying our representatives for a Vulnerable User bill to create enhanced penalties for injuring bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users, similar to the penalties currently in place for construction workers. If you can’t make it to Lansing, FEAR NOT, you can still help make a difference. The LMB is hosting a Virtual Advocacy Day as well.  You can find your representatives and send them a letter asking them to support or co-sponsor this legislation. It’s EASY! Just click here.

Since 2011, Michigan has risen from 22nd to 12th on the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly States list.  With your help, we can continue to enact policies to keep rising on that list.  Top five would be nice! 🙂
