8/29/12 – Ice Cream Redux

PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 8/29/2012 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW. PedalGR is a ride of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club.

Since it was about 97 degrees at the start of our first Ice Cream ride, only a few hardy souls showed.  They were well rewarded for their efforts at Sweet Mellisa’s in Alger Heights, but I’m going to call a re-do!  Our second Ice Cream ride will hit up the WestSide!  We’ll stop in at Twister’s on Alpine.  Hope to see you there!

Bring a few dollars for ice cream!  I recommend the Trash Can Sundae.

Need to Know:

  • This is a no-drop ride. We will do our very best to keep the group together and make sure no-one gets separated or left behind.
  • Ride is about 12 miles and will take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours (PedalGR is not a race). As the days get shorter, please bring lights if you have them.
  • Bring $$ if you want some ice cream.
  • HELMETS ARE REQUIRED on Rapid Wheelmen Club rides. (The insurance company’s lawyers insist) Please email or comment if you need to borrow one and we will try to accommodate you.

Saturday, Sept. 7-8th – KissCross Night Race and Battle at the Burg Bike Expo and Mtb Race
A full weekend of great bicycle events awaits you at Cannonsburg Ski Area. Starting Friday night with a KissCross night race under the lights, the unofficial kickoff to the Michigan cyclocross Season. With many laps around a short, closed circuit, cyclocross racing is a fantastic spectator sport. Come out and cheer the racers on while enjoying a beverage or two. Rumor on the KissCross website is that the course may go right through the beer tent! The Expo will be open from 4-7pm, with a screening of Ride The Divide at 7pm and the KissCross races at 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm.

Then on Saturday, the expo gets even bigger as the mtb races kick into high gear. Lots of prizes, lots of spectator opportunities, and more great food and Michigan beer available. Come check it out.

Late August to ????: Merrell Trails open to the public

The Western Michigan Mountain Bike Alliance just finished construction on 6 miles of world-class singletrack at Merrell Trails, part of their 50 in 5 campaign for 50 new miles of singletrack in 5 years.  The trail is part of a new Sports Complex being built south of 10 Mile near US-131.  Go ride and see what all the fuss is about.  You won’t regret it.  And if you like it, be sure to become a member, so they can build more awesome trail.

PedalGR – 8/15/12 – Plaster Creek Trail

PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 8/15/2012 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW. PedalGR is a ride of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club.

This week’s ride once again heads to the SE side.  Our destination is the Plaster Creek Trail.  Although only 1.5 miles long, this trail is truly a gem of our city.  Riding under the dense tree canopy of the Plaster Creek’s riparian zone, it’s easy to forget that you’re still in the city.  The Western Michigan Mountain Biking Alliance is also developing the Ken-O-Sha Trail inside an unused portion of Ken-O-Sha Park.  When complete, the addition will have 5-7 miles of singletrack mountain bike trail.

On the way to the Plaster Creek trail, we’ll detour for a quick stop at the Reed’s Lake overlook in EGR, since it was so beautiful the first time we visited.

Need to Know:

  • This is a no-drop ride. We will do our very best to keep the group together and make sure no-one gets separated or left behind.
  • Ride is about 16 miles and will take about 2 hours (PedalGR is not a race).  As the days get shorter, please bring lights if you have them.
  • HELMETS ARE REQUIRED on Rapid Wheelmen Club rides. (The insurance company’s lawyers insist) Please email or comment if you need to borrow one and we will try to accommodate you.

8/1/12 – Taco Ride!

PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 8/1/2012 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW. PedalGR is a ride of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club.

I’m honored to serve as Guest Co-Host for this month’s Social Charity Club of Grand Rapids event benefitting the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition. The idea is simple. Come to Bobarino’s at The B.O.B. on Thursday, August 9, between 5:30 and 9:30pm. You make a $10 donation and in return get a drink ticket and free appetizers while they last. You also get to hang out on the Bobarino’s outdoor deck with a bunch of cool people. The ENTIRE $10 goes directly to the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition. Bring some friends and help us raise LOTS of money. We want to show the Social Charity Club just how great GR’s bicycle community is with a HUGE turnout.

Please mark your calendar and I hope to see you there. Special bike parking will be available during the event from 5:30-9:30 in the BOB parking lot. More info here or RSVP on Facebook.

The week’s ride is the Taco Ride. I’m planning to stop at Tacos El Caporal after a wandering tour deep into the gut of Wyoming, where PedalGR has never ventured before. 🙂 I can’t wait!

Need to Know:

  • This is a no-drop ride. We will do our very best to keep the group together and make sure no-one gets separated or left behind.
