6/29/11 – Not Your Average Speaker Series: Cycling City

PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 6/29/2011 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW. PedalGR is a ride of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club.

This week’s PedalGR is a little non-traditional. We’ll be riding to the Wealthy Theatre, near Wealthy and Fuller, for the Not Your Average Speaker Series: Cycling City forum. You can RSVP on Facebook. From the event description:

A lot of efforts are being made to make Grand Rapids a more “bike friendly” city, including new designated bike lanes, “sharrows,” bike trails, mountain biking parks, and much more; and they are beginning to pay off.

But how do we increase the culture of bike riding in Grand Rapids? From bicycle commuting to bicycle friendly employers to more biking infrastructure, to just more bike riders?

Come find out about these efforts and what you can do Wednesday June 29th at Wealthy Theatre. We’ve partnered with BikeFriendlyGR, PedalGR and the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition to put on this informative event.

Panelists will include:

Josh Duggan of PedalGR
Kent County Commissioner Jim Talen
Mary O’Neill of Atomic Object (*a bike friendly employer)
Thomas Fish of the Motion Initiative

Moderated by Tyler Doornbos of Bike Friendly (GR).

Need to Know:

  • This is a short 1.9 mile ride to Wealthy Theatre, including a 1 1/2 hour forum on bicycling in Grand Rapids, ending at ~8:30pm
  • After the forum, join us for a ride back to Founders for delicious beers and continued conversation.
  • HELMETS ARE REQUIRED on Rapid Wheelmen Club rides. (The insurance company’s lawyers insist). If you don’t have a helmet, you won’t be “officially” part of the PedalGR ride.

Save The Date:

Saturday, July 9th – Grand Rapids Urban Adventure Race This fantastic new race is sold out, with 750 participants registered to compete, but come on out to the Start/Finish line at The B.O.B. downtown to check out the racer’s progress and see what the GR Urban Adventure Race is all about. From the race website:

“The inaugural Grand Rapids Urban Adventure Race will be held July 9, 2011. It’s kind of like the Amazing Race but we replace the boring airport lines and taxi rides with high-adrenaline biking, running and climbing.”

All proceeds benefit Degage Ministries and The WMMBA’s Grand Loop project.

Past events have included interviews with Gubernatorial candidates Rick Snyder and Virg Bernero, Culture Shock (diversity issues), and The Future of Food, among many others.

On June 29th, PedalGR ride captain Josh Duggan will be one of the featured panelists for a discussion on bicycling in GR, our growing bicycle culture, and the increase in everyday bicycle transportation.
