PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 7/8/2009 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW.
That’s right folks! Don’t miss your once in a century opportunity to ride on a date that’s a punchline to a bad laffy taffy joke! (PedalGR is a fan of bad jokes, I blame my uncles!) Plus, you won’t be able to go on a bicycle ride on a date that you can count until 8/9/10, and that’s over a year away.
This week we’ll be looping around Reeds Lake, hitting some neighborhoods that PedalGR has never visited and some that our regulars will know well. We’ll see some great big houses on Bonnell Ave, descend a hidden staircase on the NE side, and visit a fantastic lookout over downtown. You also won’t want to miss seeing possibly the coolest treehouse in Metro Grand Rapids. We’ll end the ride cruising down the Michigan St. hill before heading back to cold beers at Founders. I’m eyeing an Imperial Stout.

Need to Know:
- This is a no-drop ride. Nobody in the group will be left behind.
- Ride is about 16 miles and will take about 2 to 2 1/2 hours (PedalGR is not a race).
- Please bring WATER! There are some hills on this route.
- HELMETS ARE REQUIRED on Rapid Wheelmen Club rides. (The insurance company’s lawyers insist) Please email or comment if you need to borrow one and we will try to accommodate you.
A few highlights include:
- D.A. Blodgett Home for Children/ICCF headquarters (check out the photos in the link!)
- Possibly the coolest treehouse in Metro Grand Rapids
- Reed’s Lake
- Bradford St steps (we will help each other down the steps if you are not able to carry your bicycle)
- Belknap Lookout (see photo)
Ride Safe and see you Wednesday!
A Few Upcoming Events:
15th Annual Covered Bridge Tour on Sunday, July 12th at Fallasburg Park. Benefits the Fallasburg Historical Society.
Holland Hundred on Saturday, July 18 in Holland, MI at the Herman Miller “Greenhouse” Facility! Join over 1000 riders for pancakes and a ride on the Saugatuck Chain Ferry!
Also, if you’re just dying to own your own “contraption”, the Counterpoint/Viewpoint semi-recumbent tandem that my wife Amy and I ride on PedalGR, there is a used one for sale in Portland, OR, about the same age (15 years), but with low mileage, mint green in color, and it includes a child size boom for the front. Email Dick Sagor at rdsagor (@at@) isie.org for more information on price and shipping options. Thanks to Karen Dunnam for the tip. If you have a Facebook account, you can see a photo here and here (login required). Contact him soon, as it might not be available for long in that bicycle crazy city.
