17 miles in two hours is a pretty good clip. We tend to travel at around 6mph, or at least, that was when we were able to measure it {distance / time and all that}. We would be concerned about slowing down the party. Also, I would be sorely tempted to run my wagon, too, which really slows me down ...

Hey Rory and/or Josh. We have some extra helmets at the bike shop that I can bring along too if that would help. After all, if you get dehydrated and pass out, you might hit your noggin. I have also considered bringing my little one along on the tag-a-long and might do that tomorrow as well, depending on her mood come ride time. Rory, just email me at thomas@mibike.org and I will bring along a helmet. I just need to know approx what size you would need.

Hi All -

I'm thinking about joining you this year. Do any of the riders bring kids on Tag Alongs or trailers? My 3 year old and I rode 10 miles this past weekend, and it was a lot of fun.

If this first event isn't one for a novice with a kid-in-tow, maybe I'll see you on another ride this season!

Josh,
I'll donate an extra helmet I have that doesn't fit my giant noggin very well. I'd hate to see anyone miss out due to lacking a helmet. See you on the 29th!

Hi Rory,
Thank you for commenting. The helmet requirement comes from the insurance that the Rapid Wheelmen have to cover their rides. By associating PedalGR with the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club, I can take advantage of money that they budget to their ride captains to do things like free ice cream or last year's end of year party. I also have many club members participate in the rides. If you don't have a helmet, I cannot give you a map and have you official participate in the ride. However, I also cannot stop you from riding your bike on public roadways.

Also, I have a spare helmet that you can use. Last year we did not have any problems with dehydration because most people brought water or in rare cases were able to borrow some. The ride is at a pace and distance that many people don't need much water unless it's unusually hot, or they tend to sweat a lot.

I'm a little disappointed about the helmet requirement, as I don't think I own one. Requiring a helmet but suggesting water? You're way more likely to become dehydrated and overheated than you are to get hit (especially in a large group). I understand your reasons behind it, I just think it's just sort of limiting your attendance. I will try to borrow a helmet, as I've been looking forward to this ride for months. I'm just disappointed that just because I'm not the most upstanding example of a safe rider, I'm excluded from this ride.

On another note I'm really excited for Boston Square Community Bikes and I wish them the best. Sounds like a great idea.
