PedalGR in RapidGrowth

PedalGR was linked to in a recent RapidGrowth article on fixed gear bicycles in Grand Rapids.  Although we were basically a footnote, if you’re here from that article, WELCOME!

This is PedalGR.  It is a ride of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club that meets at 6:30pm at Founder’s Brewing Company on alternating Wednesdays.  This ride is all about seeing the city, riding safe, and having fun (and drinking Founders beer at the end).  I started PedalGR in May because I saw a need for a non-intimidating, all inclusive ride for people of all ages to get to explore Grand Rapids by bicycle.

You can look at all of the routes, download printable maps and cuesheets for most of the rides if you wanted to do one by yourself, and see photos and cadences (recaps) from nearly all the rides I’ve done so far.  You’ll also find a myriad of useful local bicycling links in the right hand column.

There are only two PedalGR rides left this summer, 9/3 and 9/17.  On 9/17 we’ll be having an end of year party at Founders with appetizers (and hopefully cake) provided by the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club!  More info on that to come.

PedalGR 8/20/08 teaser cadence

Yesterday’s ride was absolutely awesome! AWESOME! I’m so happy that so many people continue to show up to ride with us and have a great time! We had a record 36 riders.  Please continue to spread the word and bring your friends.

And a big thanks to Eric for the tacos. They were delicious! I’ll be going back to Tacos El Moroleon (on Grandville Ave, a bit south of Hall)  at a future date.

Thanks are also due to Duane and Thomas at the Motion Initiative Bike Co-op for a tour of their facility.  If you are looking to volunteer, this could be your place.  More info at: http://www.mibike.org.

Here are a few photos. I’ll post more info later. Click on a photo to view a larger version on Flickr.

8/20/08 – PedalGR Ride!

BicicletaGR Taco Ride, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 8/20/08 at Founder’s Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW.

This week’s PedalGR tours some of Grand Rapids’ Latino neighborhoods.  Everyone gets a free taco at Taqueria Moroleon, an authentic taqueria that is “just as if it were in Guanajuato, Mexico,” according to PedalGR rider Eric, who came up with the idea and route for this week’s ride.  Eric has offered to purchase all of the tacos for our riders (THANKS ERIC!) and is super stoked about this ride!  We will also be exploring many other sites in southwest Grand Rapids.

Here is the route:

Need to Know:

  • This is a no-drop ride. Nobody in the group will be left behind.
  • There will be a FREE TACO (beef, chicken, or guacamole), courtesty of fellow PedalGR rider Eric at an authentic taqueria.  The tacos will be prepared just before our arrival to allow us to get back on our way quickly.
  • Ride is 14.5 miles and should take approximately 2 hours.
  • There are a couple of steep hills, but we will make sure everyone makes it up them.
  • Water and portable snack food are recommended.
  • HELMETS ARE REQUIRED on Rapid Wheelmen Club rides.
  • We will leave right at 6:30 to maximize our daylight.  Please plan to arrive a few minutes early.

A few highlights include:

Mark your calendars on Sept. 17th for the PedalGR end of year party.  The Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club will be providing appetizers and cake after the final ride of the summer.  It will be a short route because of the dwindling daylight and fun will be had by all!

Cameras are highly encouraged to document our journey. Please contact me with any questions.

Remember, having fun and riding safely are the two most important goals! Hope to see you there! As usual, we will congregate at Founder’s for beer and munchies after the ride.

PedalGR at La Grande Vitesse

Approximately 24 riders trickled in to the parking lot at Founder’s for last week’s PedalGR ride. The weather was looking great in the mid 70s and partly cloudy with a decent wind coming out of the west. We headed off through downtown, passing the Blues on the Mall festivities on our way to the Fish Ladder.
